What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is the distinct primary health care system that blends modern science with traditional and natural forms of medicine. It is based on the healing power of nature and it supports and stimulates the body’s ability to heal itself.

Naturopathic medicine is the art and science of:

  • Determining organ systems out of balance

  • Discovering the root cause of illness

  • Encouraging the removal of obstacles to cure

  • Supporting and stimulating healing

Natural therapies include: herbal medicine, holistic clinical nutrition, hydrotherapy, homeopathy, traditional Chinese medicine, as well as prevention and lifestyle counseling.

When is naturopathic medicine beneficial?

Naturopathic medicine is beneficial for those who are looking for:

  • Disease prevention and health promotion strategies

  • Alternative treatments

  • Integrative and functional medicine knowledge

  • Improving the quality of life

  • Decreasing side effects

Looking to manage symptoms such as:

    Heartburn

  • Irritable bowel syndrome

  • Blood pressure and Diabetes

  • Hormones

  • Anxiety/and or Depression

  • Autoimmune conditions

  • Sleep issues

  • Fatigue

Your naturopathic doctor chooses remedies and therapies that are safe and effective, to increase your health and decrease harmful side effects.

What are the principles of naturopathic medicine?

  • First do no harm

  • The healing power of nature

  • Identify and treat the root cause

  • Treat the whole person

  • Physician as teacher

  • The best cure is prevention

How does it compare to conventional medicine?

NDs and MDs both provide primary care and both are similarly trained. The primary differences between naturopathic and conventional medicine are the philosophical approaches and the therapies used. Naturopathic doctors address the physical, environmental, lifestyle, psychological, and emotional aspects of health. This allows naturopathic doctors to find and treat the cause of disease using natural, non-invasive therapies.

ONE OF THE BENEFITS OF HOLISTIC CARE IS HAVING ACCESS TO LABS. WHILE ACCESS TO THESE LABS ARE A BENEFIT, THEY ARE NOT A REQUIREMENT. HERE IS A LIST OF THE LABS WE ARE ABLE TO OFFER AND THEIR PRICES.

Adrenal Function Profile  ($175)

This profile provides a comprehensive view of HPA axis/adrenal function and includes 4 cortisol levels collected over the course of the day, plus DHEA.

This test is useful for any of the symptoms:

Feeling stressed, Fatigue, Insomnia, Nervousness/Irritability, Salt/Sugar cravings, Dizzy spells, Headaches, Decreased stamina, Burn out, Chronic disease, Anxiety/depression

Neurotransmitters Basic testing ($279)

This lab evaluates 6 neurotransmitters (inhibitory and excitatory) including, Dopamine, Serotonin, GABA, epinephrine, and amino acids and metabolites. This panel is a non-invasive Analysis of urinary neurotransmitters and their metabolites. This information helps us evaluate what a person’s peripheral neurotransmitter levels are and provides an overall assessment of a patient's ability to synthesize and metabolize neurotransmitters, which must occur in both the peripheral nervous system and behind the blood brain barrier (BBB).

This test is useful for any of the symptoms:

Mood concerns, such as depression, anxiety, Diminished energy/fatigue, Insomnia, Cognitive concerns such as forgetfulness, inattention, brain fog, Addiction, dependency, Obsessions and cravings, Chronic illness, immune deficiency, Pain, Low libido, sexual dysfunction

Basic Hormone Profile ($219)

This non-invasive test requires saliva in 4 separate collections. This test is a consideration in women concerned with changing hormone levels as a result of age, cycling women experiencing PMS, Peri- and post-menopausal women concerned with their estradiol and progesterone levels for replacement considerations, and anyone with symptoms involving fatigue, insomnia, stress, immunity problems, blood sugar problems, and obesity.

This test is useful for Women Experiencing any of the following: Hot flashes, Night sweats, Breast tenderness, Irritability, Forgetfulness, Irregular menstrual cycles, Vaginal dryness, Urinary incontinence, Uterine fibroids, Increased facial / body hair, Acne

·        NeuroHormone Complete Plus (NT/adrenal/hormones) ($489)

·        Comprehensive Plus profile (adrenal & hormones) ($309)

·        Neuro Adrenal (NT/adrenals) ($399)

Complete Thyroid Panel ($189)

Is a comprehensive look at the health and function of the thyroid. This lab includes: TSH, Total T3, Reverse T3, Free T3, and Free T4.

T4, total: A T4 test measures the blood level of the hormone T4, also known as thyroxine, which is produced by the thyroid gland and helps control metabolism and growth. The T4 test is performed as part of an evaluation of thyroid function. T4 measures the entire amount of thyroxine in the blood, including the amount attached to blood proteins that help transport the hormone through the bloodstream.
Free Thyroxine Index (T7): FTI stands for the Free Thyroxine Index and is also sometimes referred to as T7. It is a calculated value determined from the T3 uptake test and total T4 test and provides an estimate of the level of free T4 in the blood.
TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone): The best way to initially test thyroid function is to measure the TSH level in a blood sample. A high TSH level indicates that the thyroid gland is failing because of a problem that is directly affecting the thyroid (primary hypothyroidism). The opposite situation, in which the TSH level is low, usually indicates that the person has an overactive thyroid that is producing too much thyroid hormone (hyperthyroidism). Occasionally, a low TSH may result from an abnormality in the pituitary gland, which prevents it from making enough TSH to stimulate the thyroid (secondary hypothyroidism). In most healthy individuals, a normal TSH value means that the thyroid is functioning normally.
T3, total triiodothryonine: Increased T3 often occurs in hyperthyroidism, but in approximately 5% of cases only T3 is elevated, “T3 toxicosis.” Do not confuse T3 with T3 uptake; these are two different tests. The latter is done very commonly as part of the usual thyroid profile. Less than 1% of T3 is unbound.
Reverse T3: Since thyroid hormone acts like our internal thermostat, thyroid hormones may be suppressed in times of stress. One way this is done is by converting the thyroid hormone T4 into an inactive form of the active T3 hormone called reverse T3. This lowers the amount of available active T3 which can lead to hypothyroid type symptoms.
Free T3: This test is used to evaluate thyroid function. It is primarily used to diagnose hyperthyroidism. It is also used to assess abnormal binding protein disorders and to monitor thyroid replacement and suppressive therapy.
Free T4: This test is used to evaluate thyroid function in individuals who may have protein abnormalities that could affect total T4 levels. It is used to evaluate thyroid function and monitor replacement and suppressive therapy.

Complete Thyroid Panel with Antibodies ($239)

Is a comprehensive look at the health and function of the thyroid. This lab includes: TSH, Total T3, Reverse T3, Free T3, Free T4 and additional looks for antibodies for thyroperoxidase and thyroglobulin in the thyroid. This lab is particularly helpful if an autoimmune cause is suspected such as Hashimoto’s or Graves. This can help give a baseline or be used as a gauge for overall health of the thyroid and immune response.

Comprehensive Stool Analysis ($345)

This lab analyzes the amount of beneficial bacteria, pathogenic bacteria, parasites, and yeast that can contribute to chronic illness and neurological dysfunction. Our gut health is the foundation of our health, and this lab can lend a window into how optimal the gut environment is. This lab requires a stool sample to evaluate beneficial bacteria levels, intestinal immune function, overall intestinal health, and inflammation markers.

Abnormal intestinal microorganisms in the GI tract are widely known to cause disease. Research shows a relationship between the GI tract and the neurological, hepatic, and immune systems. For example, excessive yeast produces toxic substances that can pass through the blood-brain barrier and alter neurological functioning causing “brain fog,” behavior problems, and learning difficulties.

Food Allergy Panel IgG ($219)

  • IgG testing determines if food reactions are contributing to physical or mental symptoms, and much more quickly than eliminating and then reintroducing each suspect food one-by-one over a period of time.

  • Removal of highly reactive foods from the diet is a non-invasive therapy that often mitigates a patient's symptoms.

  • Research and clinical studies suggest food allergies identified by IgG testing can be major contributing factors to many chronic health conditions.

  • Eliminating all identified IgG-positive foods after testing can reduce stress on the immune system, decrease inflammation (helping to heal “leaky gut”), resolve food cravings, and reduce the potential for eating disorders.

Hair Mineral Analysis ($140)

  • Determine if metal toxicity or mineral deficiency is contributing to the disorder

  • Monitor the effects of chelation (elimination of heavy metals from the body)

  • Identify if supplementation of important minerals may bring about significant improvements

As protein is synthesized in the hair follicle, elements are incorporated permanently into the hair with no further exchange with other tissues. Scalp hair is easy to sample, and because it grows an average of one to two cm per month, it contains a “temporal record” of element metabolism and exposure to toxic elements.

Nutrient elements including magnesium, chromium, zinc, copper and selenium are obligatory co-factors for hundreds of important enzymes and also are essential for the normal functions of vitamins. The levels of these elements in hair are correlated with levels in organs and other tissues.

Toxic elements may be 200-300 times more highly concentrated in hair than in blood or urine. Therefore, hair is the tissue of choice for detection of recent exposure to elements such as arsenic, aluminum, cadmium, lead, antimony, and mercury. The CDC acknowledges the value of hair mercury levels as a maternal and infant marker for exposure to neurotoxic methylmercury from fish. This lab measures 1-1.5 TBS of scalp or pubic hair for analysis.

Organic Acids Test (OAT) ($309)

The Organic Acids Test (OAT) offers a comprehensive metabolic snapshot of a patient’s overall health with 76 markers evaluating urine.  It provides an accurate evaluation of intestinal yeast and bacteria. Abnormally high levels of these microorganisms can cause or worsen behavior disorders, hyperactivity, movement disorders, fatigue and immune function. Many people with chronic illnesses and neurological disorders often excrete several abnormal organic acids in their urine. The cause of these high levels could include oral antibiotic use, high sugar diets, immune deficiencies, acquired infections, as well as genetic factors.

Our Organic Acids Test also includes markers for vitamin and mineral levels, oxidative stress, neurotransmitter levels, and is the only OAT to include markers for oxalates, which are highly correlated with many chronic illnesses.

If abnormalities are detected using the OAT, treatments can include supplements, such as vitamins and antioxidants, or dietary modification. Upon treatment, patients and practitioners have reported significant improvement such as decreased fatigue, regular bowel function, increased energy and alertness, increased concentration, improved verbal skills, less hyperactivity, and decreased abdominal pain. The OAT is strongly recommended as the initial screening test.
